Berowra Netball Club, Part 7 – Umpiring

Several Berowra girls sat for their theory exams (held at Eastwood Public School) followed by practical. At this time only one umpire controlled each game. The officials of Eastwood Ryde, especially Mrs Woods, the president were very supportive of their umpires.

Memories will always remain of the grand final played by a team from Parramatta Jail. The inmates were especially granted the privilege of “coming out”. They were escorted by wardens from their bus to their positions on the court and then a warden stood on each corner. The results cannot be remembered but the manner of play can.

Thanks to Jenny Bentley for access to records, photos, memorabilia and display items from Berowra Netball Club. Thank you also to the members of the first two Berowra Netball teams for their memories drawn from their club’s 50th anniversary (2010) display items and quoted above.
